Top-ranked Prospectors sweep Spartans

JOHN DAY - The Grant Union High School baseball team left no doubt who is the No. 1-ranked Class 2A team in the state using a combination of strong pitching and a 38-hit attack to sweep Pine Eagle in a Wapiti League doubleheader on Friday.

In the first game, the Prospectors pounded out 26 hits including grand slam home runs by Bo Thunell and Kerry Ashmead to defeat the Spartans 29-1 in a game called after five innings on the 10-run rule.

In the nightcap, Ashmead tossed a no hitter as the Prospectors defeated the Spartans 11-0 in another five-inning contest.

The victories upped Grant Union's season record to 3-1 in league games and 10-3 overall.

In the opening game, the Prospectors scored nine runs in the opening inning on singles by Joel Silva, Matt Curtis, Toby Thomas, Eli McClure and Thunell, along with a double by Kevin Percy to give Curtis a comfortable lead.

Curtis, the senior right-hander, went the distance on the mound to pickup his fifth victory of the season giving up just one hit while striking out nine and walking one.

Grant Union sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning and played add-on in the second inning, scoring eight additional runs.

Thunell's slam with one out and teammates Cody Frazier, McClure and Silva on base was the big blow of the inning.

Thomas had a triple in the second inning and Percy collected his second double of the game.

In the third frame, Ashmead cleared the bases with a blast over the Malone Field fence as 12 more Prospector batters went to the plate and eight additional runs scored for a 25-0 lead.

Pine Eagle's lone run came in the top of the fifth on a Jeff Chamberlin single and a pair of Grant Union errors.

Thunell was 4-for-4 in the game with three runs scored seven RBI and Ashmead went 2-for-4, including a fourth-inning triple, with three runs scored and five RBI. Percy was 3-for-4, including a pair of doubles and three runs scored, and Adam Kowing knocked in three runs.

In the nightcap, Ashmead was even more dominating on the mound tossing a no hitter as the Prospectors defeated the Spartans 11-0 in another five-inning contest.

Ashmead dazzled the Spartan hitters with a sharp-breaking curveball and a live fastball, striking out 11 while walking two.

The Prospectors scored five runs in the opening inning and added three more in each of the second and third frames to put the game away.

McClure led the 12-hit Grant Union attack going 3-for-3, including a triple in the second inning and a three-run home run in the third, with three runs scored and three RBI.

Percy was 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of doubles.

Grant Union hosted third-ranked Class 3A Baker in a non league game on Tuesday, the results were not available at press time, and return to Wapiti League action traveling to Prairie City on Friday, April 23, for a big doubleheader against the cross-county rival Panthers.
