COOS BAY - Vale's girls basketball team is back on top.
After losing both games at the Class 3A state tournament last winter, the Vikings made sure they would take the blue trophy back across the state this time, beating Valley Catholic 52-36 in the championship game Saturday night at Marshfield High School.
The Vikings and Valiants were tied at 30 late in the third quarter when Bailey Gregory hit a 3-pointer and Madi Johnson added a jumper to spark an 11-2 run that swung the game in Vale's favor.
Once they had the lead, they never let up and Valley Catholic couldn't recover.
"It feels awesome right now," said Gregory, who led the Vikings with 19 points in the win.
Johnson added 12 points as the Vikings won their third title in the past four years.
Valley Catholic was trying to take its second straight title in its final year of Class 3A, but was denied by the late run.
"The kids played hard, but we got away from our game play," coach John Innes said. "We wanted to get the ball inside. We forced a lot of shots in the second half.
"The kids want it so bad, sometimes it's hard to stay with the game plan."
Lindsie LaBonte had 12 points and Bailey McDevitt added 10 for the Valiants, who also lost to Vale in the 2012 championship game.
