Young musicians going abroad

JOHN DAY - Four music students from Grant Union High School will spend part of their summer in Europe.

The students, along with 250 other Oregon high schoolers, will present concerts of American music in six European countries July 4-18.

Elyse Lemaire (soprano II), Charles McNeil (percussion), Jake Waldner (bass clarinet) and Nathan Wunz (percussion) will be part of the Oregon Ambassadors of Music (OAM) under the direction of David Becker, OAM band and choir director and music department chair at Lewis and Clark College in Portland.

During the two-week trip, the band and choir will perform selections such as "The Stars and Stripes Forever," "America, the Beautiful" and "On the Mall" in community plazas, churches and concert halls in Austria, England, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

The students will also enjoy a London theater night and sightseeing.

Participating students were nominated by GUHS band and choir director Many Ann Vidourek. She and her husband Bob will accompany the group as chaperones.

The trip is coordinated through Voyageurs International Ltd. of Wheat Ridge, Colo.
