Christina Julia Barry

Christina Julia Barry, 98, of John Day, died June 30, in Walla Walla, Wash. A public viewing was held July 4 at Driskill Memorial Chapel. A graveside service was held July 5 at Canyon City Cemetery.

Mrs. Barry was born January 20, 1916, in Jacksonville, the ninth child to William Henry Brown and Emma Daisy Bean. When she was 2 years old, the family moved to Bandon, where her father had a gold mining operation on Whiskey Creek. In 1925, the family left Bandon, traveling in a covered wagon. After a long, wandering journey that took them to Canada, they homesteaded in Izee that fall. She attended a one-room schoolhouse there through the eighth-grade, riding several miles each day, to and from the school, on horseback.
