Gerald Dewayne Roe

Gerald Dewayne Roe, 81, of John Day passed away on Saturday, July 29, at Rosemary Manor under the care of hospice in John Day.

On Dec. 19, 1935, Roe was born to Clarence and Mildred Roe in La Grande. He graduated from Wasco High School. He had two children of his own and three adopted children before his marriage to Carol Roe in 1982, who had five children of her own.

He was a logger before running his own fishing boat. He then owned a service station before retiring as a restaurant owner. He also was an amusement machines business owner, renting and servicing pool tables, juke boxes, games and vending machines around Eastern Oregon.

Roe was a hunter, fisherman and avid outdoorsman who enjoyed reading, collecting stamps, gardening and picking mushrooms and huckleberries.

He is preceded in death by his two brothers Don Roe and Ray Roe; sister Phyllis Roe; adopted son Eddy Roe; and stepdaughter Donna Kemble.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Carol Roe; brother Joe Roe; two children Julie Walston and Gerry Roe; adopted daughters Tawny Smith and Dixie Birdsong; four stepchildren Patty Kautz, Linda Roether, Bill Geinger and Julie Gibbs; nieces and nephews; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held this fall in northeast Oregon. Details will be announced prior.
